Video Captions and Accessibility: What Creators Should Do
24 October 2026 · 6 min read · CaptionFy team

Captions began as an accessibility feature, and that is still their most important job. A few simple habits make your captions useful for deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, not just decorative.
Caption every spoken word
Decorative captions that show only keywords look nice but leave some viewers guessing. Caption the full speech, then highlight keywords on top.
Show important sounds
If a sound matters to the story — laughter, a doorbell, music starting — add a short note such as [laughs] or [music].
Prioritise contrast and pace
High contrast and lines that stay on screen long enough to read help everyone, including viewers with low vision or reading difficulties.
The short version
Full speech, important sounds and readable pacing make captions accessible as well as attractive.
